Soon the world will come together in Vancouver and Whistler for the Winter Olympics.
It’s the event for which every Vancouverite is waiting! After years of anticipation and just as much planning, athletes from around the world will come to Vancouver in February 2010 for the Olympic winter games.
Olympics aficionados are already planning their holidays in the Vancouver BC area so as to take advantage of the opportunity to view world-class skiers, skaters, bobsledders, curlers, hockey players, and all the other fine athletes that bring excitement to the games.
Attending the Games
While it’s still a little early to obtain tickets for the Olympics in 2010 (tickets will be available in late 2008), it isn’t too early to start thinking about your trip to Vancouver. You’ll want to consider what events you’d like to attend and whether you’d like to arrive early or stay late to enjoy pre- and post-Olympic events and ceremonies.
Reservations for accommodations may be available as early as late 2006 so a little advanced planning may be necessary to secure desirable lodging in either Vancouver or Whistler.
Vancouver or Whistler
During the 2010 games, some events will take place at venues in Vancouver while others will happen in the beautiful Whistler ski area. If you’re heading to the Olympics, you’ll need to decide whether you want to view the events in Vancouver, Whistler, or both. That will determine your need for accommodations.
In Vancouver, you can catch a glimpse of sports like curling, figure skating, ice hockey and short track speed skating. Snowboarding and free-style skiing will be held at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver.
Whistler
, of course, will be the site of all the alpine and Nordic skiing events including cross country, biathlon, and the Nordic combined; ski jumping; and “sliding” events such as bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton.
Getting Here
Vancouver is making lots of improvements to its tourist infrastructure so that you and all the other hopeful Olympic visitors will be able to reach the city easily and get around with little hassle. The Sea-to-Sky Highway from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler is being expanded to four lanes. Many of the trees below the highway level have been cleared providing magnificent vast vistas of Howe Sound as you drive on Highway 99.
The city is dedicated to making this a successful Winter Games and with the right planning, you can be in the center of the action. Stay tuned to this website for up-to-date information and the countdown to the 2010 Olympics.
